Colchester residents clearing a sofa, mattress, fridge or a short list of large household items usually meet the same fork in the road: book Colchester City Council’s special collection, or pay a private clearance by a registered waste carrier to take items from inside the property.
The council service is often the right answer for a few named items you can put on the kerbside. Colchester City Council says to make sure whoever you use to get rid of your waste is a registered waste carrier, and that if your waste is fly-tipped by you or by someone on your behalf, you could face a fine or court action (Colchester City Council). Checking takes a minute:

Colchester City Council also runs a free Saturday household drop-off in selected locations on specific spring/summer Saturdays. The 2026 schedule ran on 4 April, 4 July and 22 August, so it has finished for this year; the council hasn’t yet published 2027 dates. It is for small domestic loads and does not take upholstered seating, large loads, fridges/freezers or other electrical goods — those go via special collection. If you can fit items in a car, an Essex County Council recycling centre is another option. On Mersea Island, West Mersea Recycling Centre is on Upland Road. Book before you go: cars need a free booked slot for each visit through Love Essex. Blue Badge holders, pedestrians and cyclists do not need to book. Staff may ask to see your booking confirmation and proof of address. Sofas and armchairs are accepted at all county recycling centres, in a separate container, so ask site staff where to put them. Both sites close at 1pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and are closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
