1 March – 15 October: 9am–5pm every day. 16 October – end of February (winter hours): 9am–4pm every day — closing moves from 5pm to 4pm on Friday 16 October 2026, so book an earlier slot. Closed: Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve: closed from 1pm.
What it accepts
Household waste only, from your own home. Love Essex lists items including batteries, books, cardboard, clothing and textiles, garden waste, general rubbish, glass bottles and jars, paint, paper, scrap metal, small electricals, tyres (on or off rim), and wood and timber. Sofas and chairs go in a separate POPs container (if you can’t get a sofa out and into a car yourself, see sofa and furniture removal). Sort your load before you arrive. Colchester also has a donation point for large electrical appliances and a Community RePaint point.
What it won’t take
Asbestos; chemical waste; clinical waste; dead animals; fireworks, ammunition and explosives; fuel; gas cylinders; Japanese knotweed; ragwort. Business, trade and commercial waste is not accepted at any ECC recycling centre. (Small gas canisters up to 500 ml are listed separately as accepted — cylinders are not.)
Proof of residency
You must be a resident in the Essex County Council area. Staff may ask for proof (such as a council tax bill or driving licence). Hire vehicles also need the hire agreement. Cars, vans and trailers
Colchester is a van-friendly Essex site. Book the car slot or the van / pick-up / large-trailer slot to match your vehicle. Essex defines a large trailer as one with more than one axle. Vehicles 3,500 kg (3.5 tonnes) or over, agricultural vehicles, horse boxes/trailers and tipping flatbeds are not accepted at any Essex recycling centre.
DIY / rubble / plasterboard
Limited DIY waste from work you did yourself at your own home is accepted at Colchester, within per-visit limits (for example soil, rubble and gypsum products such as plasterboard: up to 3 wheelbarrow loads or 1 car boot).
