A calm decision guide for Colchester house clear-outs, garage piles and bulky items: when the Recycling Centre (tip) is enough, and when a licensed load-and-go clearance saves the day. Official hours and rules linked below — we do not invent tip facts.
Use this page if you are clearing a room, garage or garden pile in Colchester (or nearby towns such as Stanway, Lexden, Wivenhoe or Tiptree) and wondering whether to drive to Colchester Recycling Centre yourself or book someone to load and leave with the waste.
It is not an anti-tip sales pitch. Many small, sorted loads are perfect for a DIY tip run. Clearance is for when labour, stairs, booking slots, vehicle limits or banned items make the tip impractical.
| Factor | Colchester tip (HWRC) | Licensed clearance |
|---|---|---|
| You need | Suitable vehicle + free booking slot + time to load, queue and sort | Photos, postcode and access notes — crew loads for you |
| Waste type | Household waste only (no business / trade waste) | Mixed household / garden / light DIY via licensed partners (subject to what they can carry) |
| Labour | You lift everything | Partners lift from room, loft, garage or garden where access allows |
| Speed | Depends on slot availability and site queues | Often same or next day when diary space allows |
| Best for | Sorted car loads you can take yourself | Stairs, mixed piles, no van, probate / move deadlines |

Colchester is listed as a van-friendly Essex recycling centre. Book the van / pick-up / large-trailer slot type if that is what you drive. Essex defines large trailers as those with more than one axle. Vehicles 3,500 kg (3.5 tonnes) or over, agricultural vehicles, horse boxes/trailers and tipping flatbeds are not accepted at any Essex recycling centre.

Love Essex publishes accepted household items (including batteries, cardboard, garden waste, paint, scrap metal, small electricals, wood/timber, tyres, sofas/chairs into the POPs stream, and more) and a hard “cannot accept” list:
Business, trade and commercial waste is not accepted at any ECC recycling centre. Small DIY amounts from your own home may be allowed at Colchester subject to current DIY rules — check Love Essex before loading plasterboard or rubble.

If something sits in a grey area, describe it on the quote form — better to check than turn a crew away on the day.
There is no published price list on this site. Send photos, your postcode and a short description via the contact form, leave your mobile, and we call back with a fixed figure before any collection is booked. Volume, weight and access drive the quote. Same-day slots sometimes exist when partners have diary space.

Colchester accepts vans/pick-ups/large trailers with the correct booking. Mattresses and many household items are accepted when they are household waste — sort loads and follow site staff. Gas cylinders and asbestos are not accepted at ECC recycling centres.
Large electricals are handled under recycling-centre rules; Colchester also notes a donation point for large electrical appliances on the Love Essex site page. If you cannot lift or transport a fridge, use appliance collection or the council special collection route for listed kerbside items.
Garden waste from your own household is listed among accepted tip items. Large green piles, long carries or mixed outdoor clutter often suit garden clearance instead of multiple tip runs.
Licensed local partners. We only work with licensed waste carriers / licensed local partners and waste goes through authorised routes. Ask for partner registration details when you book.
Send photos and a postcode — we will confirm a fixed price before licensed partners attend.
