Need a sofa, armchair, wardrobe, bed or dining set gone from your home in Colchester or a nearby Essex town? Send a photo of the item and the route out, get a fixed quote back, and a local registered waste carrier collects it from inside the property where access is safe, not just from the kerb.
Most furniture removals are one or two big pieces that will not fit in a car, or a room’s worth of furniture after a refurb or a move. Typical items include:
Colchester Clearance is an introduction service: we do not run vans or crews ourselves. We take your photos and details, confirm a fixed quote with you, and connect you with a local registered waste carrier who does the collection. For fridges, freezers, washing machines and other white goods, see fridge, freezer and appliance removal. If you are emptying most of a home, house clearance in Colchester is the better fit.
Colchester City Council runs a special collection for large household items, and for furniture you can carry outside yourself it is often the cheapest legal option. As listed on the council’s page on 8 October 2026, “other large household items” (which it says includes beds, sofas or wardrobes, domestic garden furniture and toys) cost £77 for up to six items or £100 for six to twelve items. Check the council page for current fees before you book.
The council’s published rules are what decide whether it suits you:
| Council special collection | Private removal (registered waste carrier) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it’s collected from | Kerbside only, out by 7am | From the room, where access is safe |
| Day | Mondays, date given at booking | Agreed on the callback; same-day sometimes when diaries allow |
| Price | £77 (up to 6 items) or £100 (6–12), as listed 8 Oct 2026 | Fixed quote from your photos; no published price list |
| Mixed loads | Only the listed items you booked | Furniture plus other household junk in one visit |
So if you can get the sofa or wardrobe to the pavement and a Monday works, start with the council. If it is upstairs, in a flat with no kerbside space, needs to go on a particular day, or comes with a pile of other junk, a private removal is the practical alternative. Our council bulky collection vs private clearance guide covers the comparison in more detail, including electrical items.
Old upholstered seating is not treated like other bulky waste. The Environment Agency’s guidance on waste upholstered domestic seating containing persistent organic pollutants (POPs) (last updated 29 July 2026) says upholstered domestic seating may contain POPs, chemicals that were used in some fire retardants. It applies to household-type seating from homes or businesses, for example:
Under that guidance, waste seating containing POPs must not be mixed with other waste, must not go to landfill, and must be destroyed in an incinerator (or cement kiln) authorised to accept it. It can travel on the same vehicle as other items as long as it is kept separate. The guidance says items that aren’t upholstered, such as a plain wooden chair without a cushioned or fabric seat, back or arms, are unlikely to contain POPs. It also says mattresses, beds, curtains and blinds are not domestic seating and aren’t covered by it, though they may still contain POPs.
What that means when you book: tell us which items are upholstered (fabric, leather, faux leather or foam) and which aren’t. That lets the partner carrier plan to keep the seating separate from the rest of the load. It is also a reason to be wary of anyone offering to take a sofa for cash with no questions asked: GOV.UK warns you could be fined if you give your household waste to someone who is not legally allowed to take it (GOV.UK: dispose of household waste).
If you have a van or a large enough car, you can take household furniture to an Essex County Council recycling centre. There is no charge to book a slot, but you need a booking for each visit. Love Essex says items containing POPs, such as sofas and chairs, are accepted at all its recycling centres, with a separate container provided in line with Environment Agency guidance, so ask site staff where they go (Love Essex: what our recycling centres can accept). Colchester Recycling Centre also lists wooden furniture as something it can recycle if you can’t donate or sell it.
For Colchester specifically: Shrub End takes bookings for vans, pick-ups and large trailers, while West Mersea only takes car bookings. Blue Badge holders, pedestrians and cyclists don’t need a booking. Our Colchester tip guide has the current opening hours, booking links and van rules.
A sofa or wardrobe in decent condition may not need to be waste at all. The council itself suggests donating reusable items to a local reuse organisation or the Colchester Freegle group before booking a special collection. Love Essex also keeps a reuse directory of places across Essex that take unwanted items. Our Colchester community groups page lists reuse and repair options, and furniture charities and charity shops may collect too, so ask what they can accept.
Before letting anyone collect, GOV.UK says to check a collecting charity is registered as a lower tier waste carrier, and that any business you pay is an upper tier carrier. You can check both on the Environment Agency’s public register of waste carriers.
With furniture, the route out matters more than the item itself. Corner sofas in first-floor flats, wardrobes built in a bedroom, and anything that went in before a new staircase or door frame are the jobs that need planning. To quote accurately, we need:
Not every partner carrier dismantles furniture, so we don’t promise it. If an item will only come out in pieces, say so on the form and we will confirm on the callback whether that can be included. On the day, unplug electric recliners and adjustable beds, empty drawers and wardrobes, and clear a path from the item to the door.
We answer enquiries Monday to Friday, 08:00–17:00. Same-day slots are sometimes available when diaries allow; we will tell you what is realistic when we call back. Ask for the partner’s registration details when you book.

Often, yes, if the stairs, turning space and parking allow. Send photos of the sofa and of the stairs or lift, and say which floor it is on. If a tight turn means it would have to come apart, we will tell you on the callback whether a partner can do that, rather than you finding out on the day.
For items you can put on the kerb yourself, it often is. As listed on 8 October 2026, Colchester City Council’s special collection charges £77 for up to six large household items or £100 for six to twelve, collected on Mondays from the kerbside, with items out by 7am. The council won’t enter properties and can’t take glass or mirrors. Check the council’s page for current fees.
Yes, they can be included. Tell us on the form if a recliner is electric, and unplug it before the collection. Sofa beds and recliners are heavier than they look, so a photo of the route out helps us quote properly.
Yes. Mattresses, divan bases and bed frames can be collected with other furniture or on their own. For a mattress alone, see appliance and mattress removal.
List them on the form with a photo and we will confirm on the callback whether the partner carrier can include them. If you use the council’s special collection instead, it says it can’t collect glass or mirrors, so they would need removing first.
Environment Agency guidance says waste upholstered seating such as sofas and armchairs may contain persistent organic pollutants and must be kept separate from other waste, then incinerated rather than landfilled. Knowing what is upholstered lets the partner carrier plan the load properly.
Colchester Clearance does not carry out collections itself. We connect you with local registered waste carriers, who collect the agreed items and take them to authorised facilities. Ask for partner registration details when you book and check them on the Environment Agency public register.
